In his essay The Crack Up, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, “…in a real dark night of the soul, it is 3 o’clock in the morning, day after day… At that hour the tendency is to refuse to face things as long as possible by retiring into an infantile dream — but one is continually startled out of this by various contacts with the world.”
This week’s Art Talk! from VBS.TV brings us a unique approach to the classic interview with legendary SF artist Barry McGee. Not a fan of interviews, nor of showing his face, McGee took the chance to do it his way. He took the interview and he animated it with classic McGee style. So the interview about art actually becomes part of the art itself. (Reason number 3,469 why we love Barry!) In Part 1, we’re introduced to McGee’s style by Aaron Rose in robotic conversation, while in Part 2 (below) Barry delivers a polite warning to the gallery-art world. If you know me, you’re probably well aware that I have a serious obsession with The Selby. I check it every morning and whenever there’s a new post I get downright giddy. With the exception of one or two of the people featured, I don’t think I’ve really ever been disappointed. Someday I hope to have acquired enough interesting crap to make my space worthy of photographing. Until then, I’m just a Selby groupie.
In this video, entitled The Story of The Selby, Todd Selby explains how it began, how he he can afford to run the site sans advertisements and a few of his recent projects. Enjoy.
