Go see this! “Maurizio Cattelan: All” A retrospective of the Italian artist at the Guggenheim Museum….
let’s focus on some art…..shall we?
No conversation about hyperrealism, violence, and children would be complete without mention of Gottfried Helnwein. Helnwein’s paintings walk the line between upsetting and beautiful but are always provocative. While his subject matter isn’t for everyone, his skills behind a brush are undeniable. Plus he paints with sunglasses on. How bad ass is that?
Our friend Philip Iosca holds an opening party for his first-ever solo exhibition this evening at PNCA’s Manuel Izquierdo Gallery in Portland, Oregon. His new collection of nine works, HOPEFULLY I BECOME THE UNIVERSE, is inspired by seven extraordinary young men from across the United States who independently ended their lives last summer as a result of the bullying they received for being openly gay or perceived as gay.
Philip co-created Ace Portland with our creative team, and he and his partner Thomas, pictured together here in their home in Portland, are old and dear friends. If you’re in this neck of the woods tonight, we’ll see you at the reception from 6 to 9pm at 1302 NW Kearney Street. The show is on view through October 27.

“Melanie Authier’s paintings bring together visual contradictions into one imaginary space. By drawing upon the histories of abstraction and the strategies of representation, she presents improbable environments. A sense of disorientation comes about through the way in which colour, texture, line and shape compete for room within the canvas. Each work presents a brimming jostle of oppositions that the viewer is invited to bring into a certain order.”

New on 20x200: Knabstrup by Amy Jean Porter
10”x8” ($20) | 14”x11” ($50) | 20”x16” ($200) | 30”x24” ($1000)
In the newsletter, Sara writes:
Knabstrup is AJP’s newest addition to her growing 20x200 menagerie, joining Rose-breasted Grosbeak andMandrill. Jen introduced both with a little help from their mutual friend (who connected Jen and Amy to begin with), the inimitable internet maven Choire Sicha, founder and Editor in Chief of The Awl. Lots of great things have happened since then, even though the then of which we speak was not that long ago!
