Book: The Boombox Project
I’ve got a bit of a thing for boomboxes too. They’re just the ultimate symbol of 80s nostalgia.
Lyle Owerko is a photographer and filmmaker who is most known for his shot on the cover photograph for the September 11, 2001 issue of Time. For a long time he had been collecting boomboxes and taking photos of them. Eventually he had enough to create a full book and an art gallery in New York. He mentions in the video that he wanted to move away from being an “ambulance chaser” and do something that celebrated life an culture.
“The Boombox Project is a book turned art gallery in New York City. The hard copy features contemporary fine art portraits of the artist’s vintage collection of boomboxes, as well as documentary photographs of the people who pushed the boombox movement in its heyday. Images from the book are on display at the Clic Gallery in SoHo”

NEW YORK PHOTO FESTIVAL 2011 - May 11-15 in DUMBO Brooklyn
This year’s main exhibitions, curated by Enrico Bossan and Elisabeth Biondi (on show at the 81 Front Street Storefront) are presented under the shared rubric PHOTOGRAPHY NOW: engaged, personal, and vital. They offer distinct perspectives on a shared theme: the state of documentary photography today.
Jonathan Harris Today is a simple ritual of taking one photo each day and posting it online, along with a short story, beginning the day he turned 30.
Photographer Paul Jasmin grew up in Helena, Montana, enchanted by the fantasy world of movies. “When I was 16, I remember getting lost in the ravishing two-shot of Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift kissing in George Steven’s A Place in the Sun,” he says. “At that moment I was transported into a world that I desperately wanted to experience.” The 75-year-old, now based in Los Angeles, has been pursuing it ever since. -click on image for more…
